The newspaper El Mundo issued an official statement in which it denies the versions spread by some media outlets and social media users who accused journalist Javier Negre of having fabricated an interview published in the Crónica supplement in February 2016. The text, signed by the management of the Spanish newspaper, seeks to "clarify the reality of the facts" and reaffirm the outlet's commitment to informative truthfulness.

According to the statement released by El Mundo, the correction published on November 10, 2019, was in compliance with a court ruling and an agreement between the publisher and the plaintiff in the case, with the sole objective of preserving the identity and rights of the person involved. In this regard, the newspaper emphasized that it had preferred to remain silent "despite the harm suffered," in order not to violate the privacy of the affected individual.

The statement is categorical: "The journalist, although he could have acted in a manner more in line with good journalistic practice, has not fabricated any statement." Furthermore, the outlet stated that there is "audio evidence of the statements" that was submitted to the judicial process, thus dismantling the version that the report was based on false testimonies.

The text also confirms that El Mundo carried out an internal procedure of analysis and verification of the facts to clarify the circumstances and determine possible responsibilities. At the same time, the newspaper acknowledged possible errors in the preparation and dissemination of the original report, and expressed its "solidarity and respect" for the affected individual.
